PM reopens Kagamuga terminal

Hagen’s refurbished Kagamuga airport was reopened on Thursday (26/11/15) by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill after undergoing reconstruction.

The state of the art terminal building is worth K70m and is just one of the massive capital intensive programs which the National Airports Corporation is rolling out at airports in the country.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill appealed to the people to take care of the airport while taking into account the struggle they encountered before the new terminal was built.

“I am happy that this government is taking the lead in expanding our infrastructures apart from prioritizing on Education and Health. I am also very thankful to the landowners who have worked together with us to expand Kagamuga airport. We launched this program two years ago and I am proud to be here with you today to open this terminal,” Said O’Neil.

O’Neill reiterated that Mount Hagen will be undergoing major projects to improve its outlook as it serves as transit point for momase and highlands region and PNG as a whole.

The big improvement of the airport has the capacity to accommodate international flights and is funded by Asian Development Bank and PNG Government.

NAC’s Acting Managing Director, Joseph Tupiri said the reconstruction of Kagamuga Terminal is to ensure that the country complies with the safety and security regulatory requirements of the National Civil Aviation Rules and the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Standards and Recommended Practice.

“we aim to ensure that aircraft operations throughout the country are conducted within a safe and secure environment as well as improved level of service for the travelling public using our facilities,” Said Tupiri.

Apart from the reconstruction of the Kagamuga terminal building, the airport will see an expansion of the runway, taxiways, aprons and the new Air Traffic Control Tower which will cost K100m and K15m respectively.

Tupiri said the total cost of Kagamuga Airport’s reconstruction is K185m which ADB has contributed K52.5m and GoPNG with K17.5m.

O’Neill appealed to the landowners to support the expansion of the airport which will allow for direct international flights into Kagamuga.

“I want announce today that next year Mt Hagen will see direct international flights. We will start off with direct flight from Mt Hagen to Jayapura in Indonesia. We will commence work to also have flights direct to Australia so that our people here would not go to Port Moresby to get this service,” Said O’Neill.

PM said the reconstruction of the airport is part of the major projects that the government is carrying out in Mt Hagen in line with the four lane highway that is yet to be constructed by China Harbor from the Kagamuga to Keltega.

China Overseas Engineering Group Company Limited or COVEC, the company which constructed the airport, Country Representative, Tony Liu, said the construction of the terminal is a team effort and acknowledged all partners and subcontractors who had assisted in constructing the terminal.
