Students to continue boycott: SRC

Sunday May 8th, 2016

University of Papua New Guinea students on Friday opened all the doors to their main lecture rooms and school offices.
The students since Monday have sat around the forum square area refusing to go to class.
Main buildings such as Kuri Dom Main Lecture Theatre, Science Lecture Theatre, Uli Bier Arts centre and the likes were locked with chains and blocked with drums and branches of trees to prevent students from attending classes.
University of Papua New Guinea Vice Chancellor, Professor Mellam in a memo sent all the lecturers back home around 9am after learning of the situation on Monday.
However, continuous consultation with the Student Representative Council and the University Senate has resulted in doors of main lecture rooms being opened.
In a letter dated 5th May 2016 (Thursday) from the office of the vice chancellor requested the SRC President, Kenneth Rapa to urge all students to return to class. The letter stated SRC had written a letter to the Registrar to arrange for the Prime Minister and the Police Commissioner or their Representative to receive the students’ petition.
The letter further stated that the school management had acted on good faith and delivered the PM’s representatives and the SRC must do its part by allowing students to attend their classes by beginning with the removal of blockades of the lecture rooms.
Nevertheless, SRC told Sunday Chronicle that it will still maintained its position to boycott classes until the Prime Minister himself comes to the forum and get our petition.
However, on Friday afternoon, UPNG Senate through a circular strongly advised students to attend normal classes or risk their enrolment at the university if the boycott reaches its second week or after 13th of May, 2016.
The circular further stated that the University management will take necessary actions to ensure classes resume on Monday 9th May 2016 and rights of students to continue classes and staff are protected.
