PNG hosts successful seafood exposition

Welete Wararu, Executive Manger of National Fisheries Authority’s Provincial Support & Industry Development.
Tuna is a strategic asset which can bring developments to the country if PNG takes the industry seriously.
This is according to Executive Manger of National Fisheries Authority’s Provincial Support & Industry Development, Welete Wararu.

Ms Wararu said PNG needs to tap into the industry if its dream is to be the Tuna Capital in the World.

The three days Seafood Exhibition held in Port Moresby this week is Wararu’s brainchild and it was the first for PNG to host such an event that saw not only local seafood exhibitors displaying their products but also people from the neighboring Pacific Islands.
Ms Wararu said she’s very proud of the turnout of exhibitors and partners who have shown keen interest in exposing PNG’s fishing products.

“The dates of this event were not picked out of the blue. It is line with all the other global seafood shows. This is a start for PNG and the region and I’m proud that the authorities have believed in me to deliver the first ever seafood and technology exposition in PNG. Although we had four months to pull this event off, the next time we have a full year to work for next years and we are anticipating on making it big,” she said.
Ms Wararu said the three days exhibition has given local fishing and seafood businesses the confidence on their products.

“We gave our local exhibitors a week long course about the handling of their products because most of our fishing SME’s sell their products raw. When you look at our seafood SME’s, they are the future of our country and the fisheries sector. We can say Tuna is but you can only become the Tuna capital in the world when you have Papua New Guinean’s fully owning the industry. Only then we will become that dream. If Papua New Guineans don’t understand Tuna then all our money will be sucked outside. We will only own the name Tuna Capital when we have Papua New Guineans owning facilities but otherwise it is only a dream,” she said.
Ms Wararu added that if our government gave more opportunities and capitalize on the sector, PNG would realize its longtime dream of being the Tuna capital in the world.
