Kickboxing Returns

PNG Kickboxing Federation is making a comeback next month at Goroka for its National Championships to be held on the 5th to 7th Next month.
The tournament will see 19 provinces battling it out in professional and armature divisions for a spot in the upcoming PNG Games in East New Britain in November and also for a spot in the World Championships in Argentina next year.

President of the PNGKBF, Stanley Nandex said the sport has done very well in the past few years and it should continue to do so.
Nandex who came out to the media recently to announce the national championships also welcomed fighter, Rickson Yamo onboard.

Mr Yamo and the Federation for years had misunderstandings in the past but had decided to leave that aside and focus on the future of Kickboxing which they both parties agreed were bigger than them.
“Due to circumstances from international influence, some of our fighters had been led by foreign promoters. That has resulted in disagreement within the organization which has affected most of the development in this sporting code.  Nevertheless, we have decided to set those differences aside and come together.
“We are looking towards something more positive now, having learnt about the reason behind the whole inconvenience that has happened. For the good of the organization and its members, our sponsors and the public, we’ve decided to put our differences aside and restructure our organization and work towards developing other disciplines for 2018 and beyond,” said Nandex.

He said Kickboxing like many other sports has maintained international and national titles and it needed to be recognized and supported by the government.
“We have invited the vice sports minister to the opening of the national championships as a way of seeking government partnership. The government should focus on supporting sporting codes which produce actual results.”

The organization (PNGKBF) will officially be launched as a Federation during the championships after being an Association for quite a while.
The structure will see the Regional offices managing the Provincial and District games while the National federation managers the National and International events. Each of the provinces will be given programs to run their own programs and professional events will be passed onto professional event companies that will manage the events sanctioned by World Kickboxing Association in
conjunction with the PNGKBF.

Mr Nandex added that the sport would not only like to produce more World Champions but utilize the code and the sport as a platform to promote social development issues in line with the government’s Vision 2050 plan.
