Hela Province to have a Community Safety Adviser
Exxon Mobil PNG
and the Australian High Commission in partnership announced the extension of a
new community safety adviser for Hela Province who will be based in Tari.
The adviser who
is yet to be posted will focus on providing support for Village Courts and
reducing and preventing family and sexual violence in the province.
The announcement
last week was sealed with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Exxon and
the High Commission to the 2014 MoU for cooperation on development activities
in the country with a further commitment of AUS$250,000 this year.
Australian High
Commissioner Bruce Davis said the importance of partnership between private and
public sector in communities is vital to strengthen law and justice service
delivery and improve lives of Papua New Guineans.
“Today we
recognize the joint commitment of the of the Australian Government and Exxon
Mobil to support the Government of PNG to develop just, safe and secure
communities,” Said Mr Davis.
He said the
priority is the people of Papua New Guinea and give them the opportunity they
require.
“For the last 12
months under this MoU, we have placed a community safety advisor in Tari to
support the Hela Provincial Administration. The continued presence of this
adviser will support the Hela Provincial governments efforts to further
strengthen local justice delivery, improve collaboration with national agencies
and assist in making communities safer,”
Exxon Mobil Managing
Director Andrew Barry commended the efforts of PNG government and the
Australian Government of their continuous support in Hela province, especially
in the Law and Order Sector.
“Development in
any environment is really a long term process and in PNG is not an exception.
To achieve the long term success, it requires a shared vision and prosperity
and the collaboration of the public sector, industry and also the society.
“PNG is a great
country, great people and together we can work along to achieve our shared
dreams in our communities,” Said Mr. Barry.
Barry on the
occasion also extended his gratitude to the Australian Government for extending
the Australian award program into PNG LNG project areas
“This is our
second year in partnership on the law and justice program and I would like to
thank the Australian government for their recognition.
“Under the
funding, we are providing 10 scholarships to ensure that Papua New Guinea project
areas are identified to receive scholarship and assistance to further their
studies.”
