Exxon Mobil PNG and the Australian High Commission in partnership announced the extension of a new community safety adviser for Hela Province who will be based in Tari.

The adviser who is yet to be posted will focus on providing support for Village Courts and reducing and preventing family and sexual violence in the province.

The announcement last week was sealed with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Exxon and the High Commission to the 2014 MoU for cooperation on development activities in the country with a further commitment of AUS$250,000 this year.

Australian High Commissioner Bruce Davis said the importance of partnership between private and public sector in communities is vital to strengthen law and justice service delivery and improve lives of Papua New Guineans.

“Today we recognize the joint commitment of the of the Australian Government and Exxon Mobil to support the Government of PNG to develop just, safe and secure communities,” Said Mr Davis.

He said the priority is the people of Papua New Guinea and give them the opportunity they require.

“For the last 12 months under this MoU, we have placed a community safety advisor in Tari to support the Hela Provincial Administration. The continued presence of this adviser will support the Hela Provincial governments efforts to further strengthen local justice delivery, improve collaboration with national agencies and assist in making communities safer,”

Exxon Mobil Managing Director Andrew Barry commended the efforts of PNG government and the Australian Government of their continuous support in Hela province, especially in the Law and Order Sector.

“Development in any environment is really a long term process and in PNG is not an exception. To achieve the long term success, it requires a shared vision and prosperity and the collaboration of the public sector, industry and also the society.

“PNG is a great country, great people and together we can work along to achieve our shared dreams in our communities,” Said Mr. Barry.

Barry on the occasion also extended his gratitude to the Australian Government for extending the Australian award program into PNG LNG project areas

“This is our second year in partnership on the law and justice program and I would like to thank the Australian government for their recognition.

“Under the funding, we are providing 10 scholarships to ensure that Papua New Guinea project areas are identified to receive scholarship and assistance to further their studies.”
