Violence Victim's farewell

The body of Late Louisah Daniel who died after suffering injuries from her husband’s beating was brought to her family home in Erima for a final viewing on Wednesday.

Late Ms Daniels was allegedly thrown to the ground from the grand stand at Koni Tigers Oval and was repeatedly beaten by a timber on the head and body, according to eyewitnesses, by her Husband Billy Aki, who is the President of NCD Suburban Rugby League on New Year’s Eve.

According to her family members, Ms Daniels was then taken to their family home at Erima by her husband who kept her hidden in the house for two days with her injuries.

Mother of the deceased Christina Sarufu said when she learnt of the incident, she travelled from her home in Kerema and came straight to Billy’s home in Erima.

“When I arrived, he said I should not be here because my daughter was, in his own words, damaged and in the hospital. When I reached the ward she was in, I could tell that she was already gone,” Said Christina.

According to the post-mortem obtained by the family, the deceased had obtained major injuries on her body and head. A nail which was attached to the timber which the husband had used to beat her had pierced her skull and caused blood cloth on the left side of her brain causing her death.

“If he had brought her to the hospital straight after hitting her, she would have survived the doctor said,” said Christina.

Aki who was arrested and charged with wilful murder is now in Bomana and was refused bail on Tuesday by presiding Judge Danjo Koeget.

“She is just 25 years old and she has a lot of years to live and to take care of us. Now that she is gone, I’m heartbroken. I do not know how I will go about knowing that my daughter is not with me,” said mother Christina Sarufa.

According to her family, late Louisah had always lived a life of domestic violence since her marriage to Aki.

“He did not have any sense of decency when beating her. He did not think of her as his wife or as the mother to their son. The way he had beaten her was as if he really wanted to kill her and eventually he did. We all know about the violence that went on in their home and tried on numerous occasions to intervene with the police but to no avail. One week she will be alright but the next week, she’ll have injuries all over her body and face.

“Billy has no respect for us as her family. I would go to their house to get her out but she would use their son to call the mother to get her back home. My grandson is just four years old and he tells me what the father does to his mother. One time he even beat me up and ripped my clothes for trying to stop him from hitting my daughter. I had to leave my home in Kerema to come to Moresby because I knew the kind of life my daughter was living.”

Father of the deceased, Daniel Mura from Kagua in the Southern Highlands province who works in Pogera flew to Port Moresby after the passing of his daughter.

Mr. Mura condemned the violence and said he only wants the justice to take its course and does not want any compensation that Billy’s family had proposed.

“I want him to rot in prison for taking my daughter’s life who at her prime age was taken mercilessly. I witnessed the post-mortem and the damaged that he had caused cannot be measured. It was a deliberate killing and I want him to pay the price in prison,”

Late Louisah leaves behind a four year-old son, Vincent.
