PM: Govt to enforce ‘one strike and out’
The Police Act 1998
is being reviewed for a new legislation to deal with undisciplined Police Men
and Women in the country.
Prime Minister
Peter O’Neill said at a press conference early last week that Papua New
Guineans had had enough of rogue cops and the review of the Police Act is part
of the new police discipline structure.
The new Police
Structure which will be implemented this year includes the ‘One Strike and out’
policy said O’Neill.
“Our citizens
had just about had enough. They want to see a disciplined force; not only the
Police but also the defense force and CIS. We are going to work closely with
the constabulary and the other disciplinary forces to review those acts. The
Police Act is outdated and cannot perform to the changing times and the kind of
behavior we are seeing in the constabulary. We are now working on a new
legislation that will be taken to cabinet and tabled in parliament once
completed.”
He said the ‘one
strike and out ‘policy is paramount in the review which is aimed at discipline.
“We cannot have
undisciplined people in a discipline organization; it is as simple as that.”
The Prime Minister
also added that the public must cooperate with the disciplinary forces to
ensure peace and safety.
“If somebody
commits crime in the village or community, we must hand him or her over to the
police and let them face the full force of the law.”
